Chapman Street Childhood

A Protected Beginning
Family and danger
Robert DeShaun Peace grows up on Chapman Street under Jackie Peace’s intense protection. The neighborhood is poor and violent, but books, family routines, and his mother’s discipline create a small refuge.
Two inheritances
From Jackie Peace he receives literacy, independence, and endurance. From Robert “Skeet” Douglas he receives sociability, toughness, memory, and an attraction to the street.
The first division
The child learns that love can shelter him while the surrounding world demands hardness. That contradiction becomes the emotional architecture of his later life.
The Yale Threshold

Crossing the Boundary
A rare opportunity
Robert DeShaun Peace enters Yale University after St. Benedict's Preparatory School for Boys, carrying extraordinary grades and a working-class history few classmates understand.
New masks
At Yale, he becomes a scientist, athlete, dealer, friend, and observer. Each identity is genuine, yet none fully contains the others.
The unresolved passage
The university offers mobility, but it does not erase Newark, poverty, racial unease, or his father’s imprisonment. The crossing therefore expands his possibilities while deepening his division.
The Final Return

The Return to Newark
Work without arrival
After Yale, Robert DeShaun Peace teaches, travels, buys property, works at Newark International Airport, and repeatedly postpones graduate school. Each temporary choice is attached to a future plan.
The shrinking horizon
The plans become increasingly entangled with debt, family duty, marijuana, and neighborhood obligations. His movement across the world gradually gives way to a tighter orbit around Newark.
The fatal convergence
The fifty-pound marijuana operation turns accumulated contradictions into immediate danger. On May 18, 2011, the worlds he had kept separate collide at 34 Smith Street.
